In chapter 2 of Fast Food Nation Schlosser discuses Walt Disney and Ray Kroc how they pretty much came from nothing and built empires nationwide. The main part in this chapter that got me was how they became so famous and there companies grew. The answer is CHILDREN. They advertise to catch kids eyes. Through colors, charters and themes. Lets dig a little deeper.... Think of most of the McDonalds commercials in more than half they are directed to kids. The other half to adults and teens describing how cheap they are. So they catch every Americans interest. Every kid loves kids meals who was the first to offer that? McDonald's. What do they supply in theses kids meals besides the food. A TOY and they come in a fancy colored box with cartoon characters on it. If you really think about it the toy is usually a Disney character. Besides a wonderful kids meal where does every kid dream of going? Disney World. They totally play off each other to get a sale.
How much does McDonalds influence our life. Besides seeing one on every corner. The McDonalds sigh is everywhere. U may watch Daytona 500. U see the McDonalds logo on a car. U got to any sports event u see it. U go to the mall u see it. It is so common and u never really realize how theses master minds influence our everyday life.

My kids would eat at McDonalds everyday not because the food is so good but they love the toys. They think the toys are free, but we all know different.
ReplyDeleteSee, I never thought how strong the connection between Mc and Disney can be, although, just like you, I noticed that they give away Disney toys. Do you think Schlosser is exaggerating -- other fast food places give away Disney toys, right?
